Family physicians remain up-to-date with current life science research and practices by reading studies that are published in peer-reviewed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine. Additionally, family physicians often contribute to the advancement of the field of life science by publishing studies within peer-reviewed journals. As shown in figure 1, there is a closed-loop between practitioners (physicians) and researchers.
At any given time, there are popular marketing, sales, or persuasion books available for purchase, and the book is likely recommended by a trusted colleague. The book is likely filled with great information; however, the information is often outdated. The author likely began as a researcher, then published in peer-reviewed journals for several years, and likely received a book deal eight to ten years following the launch of their career. Consumer behavior research often has a lifespan of five years, yet the information shared within these books is often ten years old and does not close the loop between science and marketing teams (figure 2).
